Your business on Google Maps: the complete Google Business Profile guide (free, step by step)

The card that shows up when someone googles your business is free — and it's your best salesperson. Here's how to create it, fill it out right, and outrank your competition — without paying a peso.

When someone searches "tacos near me" or your business name, Google shows a card with a map, photos, hours, phone and reviews. That card is called Google Business Profile (formerly "Google My Business"). It's free, whoever claims it controls it, and for a local business it brings in more customers than the website itself. Yet most businesses leave it incomplete or abandoned.

The 7 steps, in order

  1. Claim your listing: search for your business on Google Maps. If it shows up, request ownership ("Own this business?"). If it doesn't, create it at business.google.com. Google verifies you by video, code or letter.
  2. Pick your main category carefully: be specific. "Pizzeria" beats "Restaurant". It's the single biggest factor for showing up in searches.
  3. Fill in EVERYTHING: hours (including holidays), phone, payment methods, parking. Every empty field is a question your customer didn't get answered — so they left.
  4. Upload real photos: the outside of your place (so people find it), the inside, your team and your products. At least 15 to start; add new ones monthly.
  5. Ask every happy customer for a review: send them the direct link on WhatsApp the same day. Reviews are the #1 factor for Google showing you above others.
  6. Reply to ALL reviews, good and bad, using their name and no copy-paste. Google rewards active listings; customers read your replies before deciding.
  7. Post something weekly: a promo, a new dish, special hours. Takes 5 minutes and tells Google your business is alive.

The 4 mistakes that sink you

  • Stuffing the name: calling it "El Güero Tacos - Best Tacos in Cancún" breaks the rules and can get you suspended. The name is the name.
  • Bought or fake reviews: Google detects them and can delete the whole listing. No shortcut is worth that risk.
  • Different info in different places: if your listing shows one phone number and your website another, Google distrusts both.
  • Duplicate listings: two listings for one business split your visits and reviews. They need to be merged.

How long until it pays off?

With a complete listing and reviews arriving steadily, you'll notice changes in 4 to 8 weeks. It's not instant magic, but it compounds: every review, photo and reply adds up. A business that's done this right for a year is nearly impossible to catch for one just starting — the best reason to start today.
