Tour operator websites in México: how to sell direct and stop giving 25% to OTAs

Viator, GetYourGuide and Airbnb Experiences take 20–30% per booking. Here's what your site needs to turn those commissions into margin: a booking engine, payments, two languages and local SEO.

If you run tours in México, you know the deal: OTAs (Viator, GetYourGuide, Airbnb Experiences, Civitatis) fill your calendar… in exchange for 20% to 30% of every booking. On a $75 USD tour, that's up to $22 gone in commission — per guest, on every departure, all year long.

OTAs aren't the enemy — they're an acquisition channel. The problem is when they're your ONLY channel. The most profitable operators use OTAs so travelers discover them, and their own website for repeat bookings, private groups, and all the traffic that arrives through Google.

What your site needs to actually sell

1. A booking engine with real availability

A contact form is NOT a booking engine. The traveler planning their trip at 11 PM from Chicago wants to pick a date, see available slots, pay, and get a confirmation right then. If your site answers "we'll get back to you tomorrow", that sale just went to Viator.

2. Online payments that accept foreign cards

Stripe processes international cards without friction and deposits into your Mexican account; Mercado Pago converts better with domestic customers. The right mix depends on your customer base — we compared Stripe, Mercado Pago and Conekta with numbers.

3. The full site in Spanish AND English

Not a Google Translate button: two real versions with separate URLs (/es/ and /en/) that Google indexes independently. Travelers search "cenote tour Tulum" in English; if your site only exists in Spanish, you don't exist for that search. Every site we build ships bilingual from day one.

4. Local SEO for searches that already carry intent

"Chichén Itzá tour from Cancún", "snorkel Cozumel price", "boat tour Isla Mujeres" — whoever types that has already decided to spend; they're just choosing who with. Ranking there is cheaper than any paid campaign. It's exactly the kind of search we target with local SEO and your Google Business Profile.

5. WhatsApp connected, not floating loose

In México and Latin America, half the questions arrive on WhatsApp: "is transport included?", "is it in English or Spanish?". If that lands on the owner's personal phone, it gets answered late and goes cold. Connected to an automated flow, every conversation is logged, answered in minutes, and ends in a payment link.

What does it cost, and when does it pay for itself?

A tour site with a booking engine and payments costs more than a brochure page, but the math is direct: if you pay 25% commission and move $80,000 MXN a month through OTAs, you're paying $20,000 MXN in monthly commissions. If your site captures even a fraction of those bookings directly, it pays for itself in months. Real price ranges in México are here.

There's a second benefit almost nobody counts: on a direct booking, the customer is YOURS. You have their email and WhatsApp to sell the second tour, request the Google review, and offer the comeback discount. The OTA never shares that relationship with you.

If you operate in the Riviera Maya, this applies double

The Mexican Caribbean receives over 20 million visitors a year, and the vast majority plan and book online, in English. Competition for those searches is real, but most local operators are still competing with an Instagram profile and a WhatsApp number. A well-positioned bilingual site is still a genuine edge in Playa del Carmen and Cancún.
