How to rank at the top of Google: a guide to positioning your business
Positioning your website or business on Google doesn't depend on a trick, but on five things in order. What you can do yourself for free, what's worth delegating, how long it takes and what it costs.
If you search for your service on Google and your competitors show up before you, it isn't because Google prefers them: it's because Google finds it easier to understand what they offer, where, and to trust them. Ranking at the top means giving Google those three certainties. There are no shortcuts, but there is an order, and almost every business skips it.
The 5 steps to rank your business on Google
- Pick searches you can win. "Dentist" is impossible; "dentist in Del Valle" isn't. People who search with a city, neighborhood or specialty are more decided to hire and there's far less competition. Write down the 10 exact phrases your ideal customer would type.
- One page per search. Google ranks pages, not sites. If you want to show up for "chair rental in Monterrey" you need a page about only that, with that phrase in the title. A single "Services" page with everything mixed ranks for nothing.
- Fix the technical side. It should load fast on mobile, have a sitemap, give each page its own title and description, and be registered in Search Console. It's the least visible part and the one most sites get wrong.
- Complete your Google Maps listing. For a local business, the map shows before the regular results. Right category, photos, hours and, above all, steady reviews.
- Get other sites to link to you. Directories in your field, suppliers, clients, local press, chambers of commerce. Each link is a vote of confidence, and it's the factor that separates page 2 from page 1 when everything else is in order.
What you can do yourself, for free
- Claim and complete your Google Maps listing. Here's the step-by-step guide.
- Ask every happy customer for a review, the same day, with the direct link over WhatsApp.
- Register your site in Google Search Console and check which searches you show up for today.
- Rewrite each page's title so it says what you offer and where, in under 60 characters.
- List your business in the directories of your field, always with the same name, address and phone.
The mistakes we see most
- Trying to rank for the bare word. Competing for "lawyer" against national directories is wasted effort.
- A builder-made site that loads slowly on mobile. Google measures speed and people leave before it opens.
- Publishing for the sake of it. Ten generic articles are worth less than one page that answers a buying-intent search well.
- Buying links or reviews. Google detects them, and the penalty costs more than the benefit.
- Changing page URLs in a redesign without redirecting the old ones. That's how years of ranking are lost in an afternoon.
How long it takes and what it costs
| What | Time to show | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps listing with reviews | 4 to 8 weeks | Free if you do it yourself |
| Searches with a city or specialty | 2 to 3 months | SEO from $4,000 MXN per month |
| Competitive searches in a large city | 6 to 12 months | SEO from $8,000 to $18,000 MXN per month |
| Google Ads | First week | Ad spend plus management, while you pay |
If someone promises you first place in 30 days, they're either talking about ads, or about a search nobody makes, or not telling the truth. Nobody controls the order of Google's results; what can be controlled is the work that gets done.
- How do I rank at the top of Google for free?
- With a complete Google Maps listing with reviews, a dedicated page for each service and city, clear titles and the site registered in Search Console. All of that is free; what costs is the time to do it well and consistently.
- How do I rank my website on Google?
- Pick specific searches with a city or specialty, create a page for each, make sure the site loads fast on mobile and get links from other sites in your field. Google ranks individual pages, so each one should answer a single search.
- How long does it take a page to rank on Google?
- For searches with a city or specialty, two to three months. For competitive searches in large cities, six to twelve months. The Google Maps listing usually improves in four to eight weeks.
- Which is better, SEO or Google Ads?
- Google Ads delivers in the first week and stops when you stop paying. SEO takes months and then brings visits without paying per click. Many businesses start with ads while SEO matures.
- How much does SEO cost in Mexico?
- For a local business, between $4,000 and $8,000 MXN per month. For a site with several cities or services, between $8,000 and $18,000 MXN per month. It depends on how competitive your field is and how many pages need work.
